bullet  General Notes:

Douglas first went to Africa in 1930 and became superintendant of native education in what was then Northern Rhodesia.

In Basutoland after WWII, he became one of the youngest directors of education in the colonial service, before moving to Nyasaland(Malawi) and then to Uganda.

Douglas was director of education in Uganda between 1952 and 1958.

Sir Evelyn Baring, governor of Kenya persuaded Douglas Miller to move to Kenya where he was initiall Director of Education and subsequently permament Secretary of Education.

He was awarded an OBE in 1948 and CBE in 1956.

He retired from the colonial service and took up the post of secretary to the King George Jubilee Trust.

He retired at 65 and was knighted the following year.
