bullet  General Notes:

Listed in 1871 Census as staying with his grandparents.

left England for America in 1884. In the spring of 1886 he signed on in San Francisco as a crew member of the steamship "Bear". The Bear was built in Dundee, Scotland and rigged as a barkentine, but also carried a steam engine. His job was "coal passer", working in the engine room. The Bear made annual trips to the artic to stop excessive slaughter of seal, delivered mail and also was used as an ice breaker in artic rescue missions. She was bought by the US Revenue Service and my grandfather went on the first Bering Sea Patrol to Pt. Barrow.
Upon his return in October he went to Kansas where he took up farming and met and married Blanche Lottie Powell in 1889. She was born in Michigan in 1869 and died in Port Angeles, Washington in 1945.
About 1905 moved to homestead at Lloydminster, Saskatchewan; later became manager of the Tiendin Stock Farm at Lashborn, Saskatchewan; in 1909 returned to Oregon for 3 years. Then again went to Canada, living in New Brunswick and Oshawa, Ontario.
They had three children: Edward Mackelcan Johns, b. 1890, Kansas, d. 1974, Port Angeles, Washington; Thomas Powell Johns b. 1895 in Oregon and died 1975, Santa Barbara, California; and Ellen Hortense Johns, b. 1900, Kansas and died 1992 in Des Moines, Washington (near Seattle), buried in Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island.
The family farmed in Kansas, Oregon, and Canada. In Canada they lived in Lloydminster and Lashborn (where Edward was manager of a large stock farm). He returned to England in around 1915/1916. In 1916 asked Blanche for a divorce and Blanche & Ellen returned to USA. In 1921 he again settled in the United States at Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island, Washington, where he was an Agent for Puget Sound Power and Light Company.
In 1923 Ellen found ERMJ living alone and re-united her parents who lived at Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island until their deaths.
